LeoBeau asked:

I know people are hesistant when they hear “FREE” services b/c nothing in the world is free. I do call automotive businesses either creating my own lead, Yahoo Locals, or I saw they’re services on a local ad/newspaper to get them to see what we can do for their business. I know auto repair shops are busy, but what’s best way to approach via phone call? I’m very quick & str8 to the point of what we do, then I ask them for their email (I also say we don’t spam, it’s free).

Do car batteries recharge themselves?

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Jamaal E asked:

I found this article on wiki:
“Charge and discharge:
In normal automotive service the vehicle’s engine-driven alternator powers the vehicle’s electrical systems and restores charge used from the battery during engine cranking. When installing a new battery or recharging a battery that has been accidentally discharged completely, one of several different methods can be used to charge it. The most gentle of these is called trickle charging. Other methods include slow-charging and quick-charging, the latter being the harshest.
In emergencies a battery can be jump started, by the battery of another vehicle or by a hand portable battery booster.”

Does this mean that if I were to bring the battery to the point where I get the battery low indicator light that turning the car off (or mabe letting it run?) Would recharge the battery? Why then switch out the battery when it goes dead?

Trying to run two portable DVD players and a power inverted 37w unit and trying to see how much stress I’d be putting on the car battery and how long I could go before the battery goes dead. However if it’s true that the battery recharges it self, then I dont think this would be a problem unless I run the units for too long.
So I guess my next question would be (another post) that when something is inserted into the cigarette lighter port, is it running directly off the car battery, or the alternator?

VSC light in 2004 Toyota RAV4?

happy asked:

Recently, I had Fuels injector cleaning service done at Wal-Mart. After this service was done, the “Service Engine” and “VSC control” light in the dash board stays ON. I was told by Wal-Mart automotive service that the “Check Engine” light is ON since the fuel injector cleaning is done and the oxygen sensor is reading the oxygen-fuel ratio improperly. It will go OFF in 24 hrs. They did not take any responsibility for “VSC” light staying on. This light was not ON when i turned in my vehiclefor fuel injector cleaning service.

Are they telling me the truth about “Service Engine” and “VSC” light? Any advice would be appreciated.

mm86 asked:

What repairs is each class capable of?
I know a C tech is mainly oil changes, tires, and little things like that. But what type of work would classify you as a B or an A tech?
(I work as a mechanic doing oil changes, tires, brakes, front end/suspension, alignments, trans services, rear/front diff services, tune ups, exhaust, and some other diagnostic work).
I have been trying to figure out what class I would be for future job refences.

Thanks!

Automotive foot pump?

TechNewbie asked:

I saw an automotive foot pump at a store and was wondering how long it takes to top off a care tire with one of these? For example, pumping enough air to get your tire from maybe 30psi to 32-35psi. Do they require a lot of strength (in addition to muscle) as well? I normally just go to a service station, but am curious. It may be a good backup that won’t wear out like the portable compressors can.
