Try selling antiques at The Scott Antiques Market.
Because if you walk into Best Buy and start haggling for a computer or TV…you’ll look like an idiot.
I work in retail, people do haggle prices. It truley amazes me. They act like it’s a yard sale. Specially if they spend alot of money they use the phrase “what can you do for me”
I think it’s because haggling has become part of the process in real estate and buying cars, plus in those cases the people selling them are in a position to change the price if they wish. At malls and restaurants the sales people aren’t usually authorized to change the prices on items.
You can try to haggle on anything you want if you think it might make a difference. I hear about people haggling (and getting a better price) in situations I never thought possible. Then again, some people are good at it and others aren’t. Another part of it is that many people are reluctant to haggle because they’re afraid of being rejected or appearing cheap.
takes too much time.
We have a couple of customers who will do that to me at Wal-Mart when they find a shirt that is not made right, they expect the price to be dropped. Then I have to explain to them, that if there is something wrong with the shirt in the first place, we really shouldn’t sell it. When we have baby furniture boxes that are damaged, they want the price to be dropped, even though the product should be fine. I’ve never seen a manager drop the price of anything when a customer asks for. It is sold as is, and I think that is what most people expect these day…
Good question. I think it’s because that owners of cars and real estate are selling them indpendently and therefore can change the prices as they wish. Home owners and car dealers are often really anxious to sell their homes/cars. While I don’t think Walmart really cares if you’re rushing in to buy the newest big screen tv or not because they have so much money anyway.
I try to get a lower price on almost everything. They tell me the price and I say “So, if I don’t pay you $XXX, we can’t do business today?” What have you got to lose? All they can say is “NO”. If I want it bad enough, I’ll then pay their price. If not, I walk. Many times, they’ll stop you when you start walking away and the price has suddenly become negotiable.
People try it. My husband is in upper management for Lowes. He is always being haggled. But you know what, sometimes (not always) it works if it is a large account they are trying to contract.
When I worked at Pier 1 (in college) people always haggled us to. There, we just laughed at them.
