Any ideas on how to get free publicity for my business?

Jill C asked:

My business is an automotive service business, which means I diagnose hard to find problems, do prepurchase inspections and do predictive maintenance. I do not repair cars or recommend garages. I am totally unbiased. I give a 12 page report.

I have testimonials from my satisfied customers. They would of spent thousands for repairs Coming to us gave them the piece of mind they were looking for. They couldn’t be taken for a “ride”. Forewarned is forearmed. We are not auto mechanics we are professional automotive engineers. Our business is to diagnose, report and analyze.

I know the media would give me free publicity. How do I go about it?

Create a ‘press release’ - it’s like a story about your business that a paper can publish as ‘news’.
    Google press release.

Many papers also feature new business’ for free. Ask.

Give the people who supplied testimonials your business cards and ask them to hand them out.

Cross promote with a business like a pizza joint - supply a coupon for $10.00 off your report (example only - make it fit your business) and then get the pizza joint to give you coupons to hand out to your customers. That way the pizza customers know about you and your customers know about the pizza place. Either way, the customer walks away with something ‘extra’ and of value that they didn’t expect and they feel good about the experience.

Your library will have some great books to check out. Check out books on writing press releases and I recommend “Marketing without Money” by Nicholas E Bade who goes into detail on hundreds of no and low cost advertising campaigns you can adapt to any business. It’s important to get the word out especially to your target market… backyard mechanics, used car dealers and buyers, and garages that cannot afford their own equipment.

Get a website and pay for it to be featured in search engines like google. So many people go to the web these days to look for stuff. Also get your company info and phone number put on a magnet sign for you car (not permanent but everyone will see it as you drive around). Wouldn’t recommend fliers as I don’t agree with wasting paper and people **** junk mail or stuff handed out to them. Where is your niche market? Find a way to target people. Get on the web - pay the money for a great site and to be listed high on searches.

Obtain a free website for your business and target it for your distinct area only. Your niche area of business. Have some business cards made up(online for free is fine). Make sure to put your website url on all cards as well as inexpensive flyers. Your web address will go on EVERYTHING you can think of. On your free website, insert all the testemonials of all your clients and your services. Be consistent and it will pay off. Best of luck to you!
